Is There a Dress Code at Purchase School?
Yes. The Dress Code, which is part of the district-wide Code of Conduct, states that “all students are expected to give proper attention to personal cleanliness and to dress appropriately for school and school functions.”
Among the specific requirements under the Dress Code are the following:
>Student dress shall be safe, appropriate and not disrupt or interfere with the educational process.
>Student dress that is extremely brief is not appropriate and not allowed. This includes tube tops, net tops, halter tops, spaghetti straps, plunging necklines (front and/or back) and see through garments.
>Underwear must be completely covered by outer clothing.
>Footwear must be worn at all times, and footwear that is a safety hazard is not permitted.
>Hats may not be worn inside the school.
>Clothing items may not have messages that are vulgar or that denigrate others.
>Clothing items may not have messages that promote and/or endorse the use of alcohol, tobacco or illegal drugs.
>Gang paraphernalia or dress is not permitted.
The Dress Code further specifies that when violations occur, students will be required to modify their appearance by covering or removing the offending item and, if necessary or practical, replacing it with an acceptable item.
In elementary school, unlike in middle and high school, parents usually have the lead role in selecting and buying children’s clothes.
Parents are asked to keep the dress code in mind, therefore, and refrain from sending children to school in clothing which violates the policy.
